Federation Services

Federation is the ability to pass Authentication or Authorization information from one Enterprise (or Security Domain) to another. The result is an increased ability to partner with organizations. Imagine speeding up JIT (Just in Time) deliveries by allowing Purchasing to go directly into a Vendor's Order Entry System WITHOUT having to authenticate because there was a trust relationship already in place between the two Enterprises!

The key to Federation, though, is the Business Agreement that must be put into place to ensure that there really is a Trust relationship. This is the one area in IAM where the technology (SAML, SPML, Web Services, SOA Architectures) MUST take a back seat to Business Agreements.
